Chant Du Cygne
Chant du Cygne was a semester long project during my final year of my undergraduate program. The intention was to exhibit the amalgamation of the skills we have developed as students at the university. From ideations to fully constructed garments, the project allowed for a fully self developed capsule collection.
Inspired by the emotions we experience as artists, Chant du Cygne is a guided journey of the Mute Swan's life cycle as a reflection of the tortured artist's own.
Ideation
I took inspiration from old magazine cut outs that had motifs or shapes I was drawn too. I wanted the collection to tell a story, each look conveying a part of the whole while still being able to stand alone.
Being that it was my final collection, I wanted the story to reflect my experience as an artist. I organized dedicated pages to each of the four looks, curating the aesthetic of each look. I then quick sketched some looks using these inspirations , eventually narrowing down to the final four sketches chosen for the collection.
Each of these notebook clippings correlates to a stage of the mute swans life cycle: Hatchling (representing a newly discovered craft), Cygnet (representing the artist’s child like wonder when first exploring their craft), Sexual Maturity (representing the mastering and commodification of the artist’s crafts), and Death (representing burn out, self doubt, and the negative emotions of being an artist).
